Getting found on Google in your town
When someone searches for “hairdresser Vevey” or “joiner Fribourg”, Google first shows a map with three businesses. Appearing there can change your business. The good news: it isn't reserved for big brands. Here are the seven steps that really make a difference.
1. Complete your Google Business Profile
This is the foundation. Create or claim your free profile, then fill in absolutely everything: a precise main category, address, opening hours (including public holidays), phone number, a link to your website and a description of what you do. A complete profile builds trust, with Google and with your future customers.
2. Add real photos, regularly
Your shopfront, your team, your work, your premises. Profiles with recent photos look alive. Avoid stock images: people want to see your place.
3. Ask for reviews, and reply to every one
Reviews are one of the strongest signals for local SEO. Make a habit of asking happy customers for a review, for example with a short link or a QR code at the till. Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and promptly.
4. Keep your details identical everywhere
Your name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same way on your website, your Google profile, your social media and in directories. Inconsistencies make Google hesitate.
5. List your business in Swiss directories
local.ch and search.ch are widely used in Switzerland and also serve as a reference for Google. Check that your details there are correct and up to date.
6. Mention your town on your website
Your website should say clearly what you do and where. A heading like “Bespoke joinery in Fribourg” works far better than “Welcome”. If you work in several towns, one page per area can help.
7. Take care of the mobile version
Most local searches happen on a phone, often on the move. A website that is slow or hard to read on mobile drives visitors away, and they simply call the next business on the list.
Local SEO is about consistency rather than one big push: a few minutes a week is enough, as long as you keep going.
